How is it to get the economy going?
I read an article in the straits times a few weeks ago. It said "donations to charity organizations totalled 30 billion US$". I was encouraged, brightened to know of this, but as my prediction has it, a few lines below, the author stated the problem "only 10% of donations go to the needy." Where are the rest of 90%? Donated to luxury-providing firms which need money to fund their latest development. For example, the construction of an opera hall.
Today I just saw one of the many scenes of needy families needing financial support. Actually, i've known of people facing worse plights.
How much have we know what it is to give but not given? We sing "give all you have away". Go eat shit. We know not what it is. We have a 100 dollars and donate $10. Then with fatter pockets of $100,000, we donate $1000. What sacrificing are we committing ourselves to so to claim that we love them?
Digressing from the sides of citizens, these people are going cyclical poverty. Medical bills are sky high, and subsidies are "high" (as what they say), but not enough. Always not enough. But for those guys, definitely not enough. Our country isn't a welfare state, and thus, it incites people to work to cover medical costs. Debts mount like climbing dunes in the desert. Slowly layer by layer. Because the people work, it gets the economy going, and covers the expenses, a nice 2-in-1, killing 2 birds in one stone indeed.
But to say that "We love the people", don't we need to help them more? Don't more aid needs to be passed to these really low income people? No, it is not that i oppose to Singapore not being a welfare state, but it's the case that a minority are suffering so much, to cure a disease, to save a life. But looking at ourselves, those of us who are able to help the needy, and say that we need to "love and help those in need",
give a piece our ourselves.
my 2 cents worth.
